Bharatanatyam
Teacher: Dr. Joyce Paul Siamak
This class will guide you through exploring the complex art form of Bharatanatyam the roots of which go back to between 200 BC to 200 AD. You will learn to use hand gestures, eye, neck and head movements as a tool for storytelling. You will be able to master a single move and perform it in different percussive rhythms. At the end of the session, we will pick a song of your choice and choreograph it on the spot using the grammar of dance from the ancient text called Natyashastra.

Have fun discovering the way smooth and sharp, strong and light, high and low feel as you move in this dance style. Dancers will have the opportunity to develop their own voice through learning how to free-style and build confidence in their own movement.
If Trees Could Dance ...
Teacher: Karin Johnson
Step into the rain forest and become your 'inner tree'. In this workshop we will explore the coastal rainforest through music and dance. We'll start along our path with a simple song and create a forest soundscape on barred instruments (i.e. xylophones and metallophones) and unpitched percussion (drums, shakers, etc.). Using elements of movement, we’ll play with particular characteristics of the Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce, Yellow Cedar, Arbutus and other trees of Pacific Northwest. We'll improvise on a variety of instruments to accompany our dance, then pull together all the layers of our ecosystem for a final moment in our living forest.
Merging Dance with Poetry
Teacher: Mary Lynn Babcock
What is metaphor? How can metaphor be used in poetry and in dance? In this session we will discover the answers to these questions through tapping into the power and use of metaphor as found in Haiku, a short form of Japanese poetry, and how these methaphors can be translated into dance-making. Japanese Haiku provides a way of looking at the physical world as seeing a spontaneous brief moment of life. Because Haiku is a form of poetry, it is basically compressed language that is full of rhythm, feeling and imagery. The participants in this class will find the metaphoric connections collectively and then tranlate that into movement. We will create short dance sketches, share, and then reflect to allow group brainstorming answers to questions such as, how we worked in a group, what issues arose, and how did our group work through them.
This work is for the dance student and teacher because we find and participate in a variety of 'team approaches' in learning. We will learn group building skills, listening skills, and the significance of why it is important to know how to work together! Join us for some poetry and dance-making fun!
Musical Theatre
Teacher: Paul Winkelman
This class will give you a taste of musical dance theatre combinations found in Broadway musicals.
